Meet Rebecca Kandilian

In our latest alum spotlight, we catch up with Rebecca Kandilian, Pharm.D., '14, our 2023 Distinguished Alumna of the Year and honored guest speaker at our recent White Coat ceremony.

She shares more about her current role as an inpatient pharmacy supervisor at Kaiser Permanente in San Marcos and how the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at UC San Diego prepared her for this position.

Tell us more about your current role. What is a typical day like for you?

In my current role I oversee pharmacy operations and manage a team of pharmacists and technicians. I also serve as the PGY1 residency program coordinator, contributing to the training and professional development of our residents while ensuring they gain hands-on experience in a dynamic clinical environment.

My typical day involves a blend of operational responsibilities, such as managing workflows, addressing medication safety and regulatory issues, and collaborating with various departments to support medication-related needs. I also oversee drug purchasing, inventory management and compliance with state and federal regulations.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I truly enjoy the opportunity to develop people. I find mentoring residents and staff is incredibly rewarding; I take great satisfaction in watching my team grow, whether it’s supporting a new pharmacist or helping a technician expand their skill set. Balancing these developmental aspects with the operational demands of the pharmacy allow me to create an environment where both patient care and professional growth are prioritized.

How did Skaggs School of Pharmacy prepare you for your current role?

Skaggs School of Pharmacy provided me with a strong foundation in clinical pharmacy, leadership, and critical thinking. The program challenged me to think beyond the basics, apply evidence-based medicine, and work seamlessly within multidisciplinary teams—all of which are essential in my current role.

Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Skaggs School of Pharmacy?

I cherish the camaraderie I had among my classmates. We were a curious group; one of our professors affectionately nicknamed us "the question corner" because our debates often extended well beyond the classroom material. This culture of curiosity and collaboration cultivated a rich learning environment that has profoundly shaped my professional mindset, encouraging me to approach challenges with an open mind and a commitment to continuous learning.

I also enjoyed being involved with many student organizations, including organizing educational events, hosting guest speakers or advocating for changes that would benefit our cohort.

What advice do you have for prospective pharmacy students?

Stay open-minded. Some of the best opportunities in pharmacy come from saying yes to experiences outside of your initial focus. Be willing to explore different paths—you may discover a passion in an area you never expected.

Why did you select UC San Diego for your pharmacy training? Would you recommend the program to prospective students?

I selected the Skaggs School of Pharmacy because of its reputation for excellence in clinical pharmacy and its emphasis on hands-on learning. The access to a diverse patient population and the opportunity to work alongside experienced clinicians were also key factors. The training I received equipped me with both the technical knowledge and the leadership skills I rely on today.

I would highly recommend the Skaggs School of Pharmacy to any prospective student. It offers a rigorous academic foundation paired with clinical experiences that will prepare you for any pharmacy setting. The faculty is dedicated to student success, and the collaborative environment fosters professional growth. The school not only prepares you for the challenges of pharmacy but also pushes you to excel beyond the classroom.

When you aren’t working, what do you do for fun?

I enjoy spending time outdoors—whether it’s hiking, camping, biking, or exploring new trails. I also love experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen and spending time with family and friends.
